942,439. Making helically finned tubes; twisting. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. May 3, 1962 [May 5, 1961], No. 17034/62. Headings B3A and B3E. A method of making tubes with helical striae for use in heat exchangers and vapour generating plant comprises applying torsion to a tube having longitudinal striae so as axially to twist the tube and impart to it a permanent twist and a helical form to the striae. A tube having longitudinal external and/or internal striae is clamped at one end and fitted with a spaced apart second clamp rotatable about the tube axis and which applies torsion to the tube between the clamps to deform the tube axially and twist the striae to a helical form. Additional freely rotatable anti-buckling clamps or sleeves are fitted along the length of the tube between the two clamps or a mandrel inserted in the bore. The tube may be externally or internally heated to facilitate twisting and the clamping devices water cooled. The speed of twisting may be controlled by the speed at which the heating appliance e.g. a ring of gas flame is passed through the bore. A tube formed with internal striae is twisted a predetermined amount greater than that required, prior to forming on the tube external striae, the tube is then twisted in the opposite sense to that of the first operation by an amount equal to the excess twist imparted to the internal striae. Pitch variations are obtained by means of clamps positioned at various points along the tube length.
