A braking apparatus for motor vehicles comprises an air - pressure - operated system for actuating one set of brakes, an air-pressure-boosted hyraulic system for actuating another set of brakes, and common pedal-operated means for actuating the control valve of the air pressure system and the master cylinder of the hydraulic system. As shown, a boosted hydraulic system for operating the front wheel brakes includes a servomotor 1, a control valve 2 and an hydraulic output cylinder 3 from which a conduit 4 leads to the wheel brake cylinders, compressed air being admitted to the servomotor by way of the valve 2 from a conduit 5 connected to a reservoir 6 which, or a supplementary reservoir, may be combined with the servomotor. The servomotor hydraulic cylinder unit is of the type wherein the servopiston has mechanical connection with the hydraulic cylinder piston and in which pressure generated in the master cylinder 7 is transmitted through conduit 8 to a plunger which actuates the valve 2 and also to a space behind the piston in the hydraulic cylinder such that normally the latter transmits the output of the servomotor and of the master cylinder 7 to the wheel brakes, but transmits the pressure generated by the cylinder 7 alone in the event of a failure of the compressed air supply. The cylinder 7 is actuated by a foot pedal 9, a " pulltype " valve 13 being interposed in the rod linkage 10 and controlling the flow of compressed air to the rear brake power unit 14 from a reservoir 15; depression of the pedal effects generation of the master cylinder pressure to operate the front brakes and simultaneous admittance of air pressure to the unit 14 to operate the rear brakes. In a modification, the rod and lever system 10, 11 and 12 and valve 13 are replaced by a beam to which the pedal 9 is connected, the ends of the beam being connected respectively by rods to the cylinder 7 and a push-type brake valve controlling the flow of compressed air to the unit 14.
