Abstract

The invention comprises benzhydryl ethers (antihistaminics) of the general formula I, <FORM:0942152/C2/1> (wherein R1 represents a hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine or bromine atom, or an alkyl or alkoxy group containing from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, R2 represents an alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, m is 0, 1, 2, or 3, n is 1 or 2 and m=n is at least 2), their acid addition salts (e.g. with hydrochloric, hydrobromic, sulphuric, citric, oxalic, tartaric, succinic, maleic acetic, benzoic, hexahydrobenzoic, fumaric, methanesulphonic and naphthalene -1,5- disulphonic acids), pharmaceutical compositions containing the ethers and/or their salts together with an inert carrier, and a process for preparing the ethers and salts by condensing a diphenyl-methyl compound (II) with a pyrrolidine or piperidine derivative (III): <FORM:0942152/C2/2> (wherein one of the two symbols X represents a hydroxyl group and the other represents a chlorine or bromine atom), optionally followed by salt formation.
