Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0941993/C2/1> where R is an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radical containing 1-4 carbon atoms and X is O or NH; and their water-soluble salts, these compounds may be prepared by condensing cyanuric chloride in any desired order and in the molecular ratio 2:1:2:2 with (a) 4,41-diaminostilbene-2,21-disulphonic acid, (b) a hydroxybenzene sulphonic acid or aminobenzene sulphonic acid, and (c) an N-substituted aniline C6H5NHR. The products are of use as optical brightening agents. Examples prepare various sodium and triethanolammonium salts of the above compounds. ALSO:Optical brightening agents of the formula: <FORM:0941993/C3/1> where R is an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group containing 1-4 carbon atoms and X is O or NH (see Division C2) are (i) added to a linear synthetic polyamide spinning composition, and (ii) used for optically brightening starch.ALSO:The invention comprises detergents containing at least one brightening agent of the formula <FORM:0941993/C3/1> where R is an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group containing 1-4 carbon atoms and X is O or NH (see Division C2). Specified types of detergent are sulphite waste liquor, soaps, anionic detergents of the sulphonate and sulphate types, e.g. salts of 4-sulpho-monoalkylphthalates, alkyl sulphates, sulphonated 2-alkyl benzimidazoles, alkylaryl sulphonates, and condensates of fatty acids with hydroxy- or amino-sulphonic acids, and non-ionic detergents, e.g. ethylene oxide condensation products with fatty alcohols and amines, and with alkylphenols; these detergents may also contain conventional additives such as alkali metal carbonates, phosphates, pyrophosphates, polyphosphates, metaphosphates, silicates, perborates and percarbonates. Materials which may be brightened by the use of brightening agents of the above formula include fats and oils.ALSO:Optical brightening agents of the formula <FORM:0941993/A5-A6/1> where R is an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group containing 1-4 carbon atoms and X is O or NH (see Division C2), are used to brighten cosmetics such as toothpastes, hair dressings and tonics, and sunburn preparations.ALSO:Materials are optically brightened by treatment with a compound of formula <FORM:0941993/D1-D2/1> where R is an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group containing 1-4 carbon atoms and X is O or NH (see Division C2). These compounds may be applied as an aqueous solution, a solution in organic solvents or as a dispersion, or they may be added in the course of manufacture of the material to be improved, e.g. by adding them to paper pulp. The brighteners may also be used (a) in admixture with dyestuffs or as additives to dye-baths or printing, discharge or resist pastes; (b) in admixture with chemical bleaches or as additives to bleaching baths; (c) in admixture with dressing agents such as starch, and (d) in combination with detergents (see Division C5). Materials suitable for optical brightening include textile materials such as cotton, hemp, flax, linen, jute, ramie; rayon, viscose rayon; materials made of cellulose esters or of polymers such as polyesters and polyamides; feathers, hairs, pelts, skins, leathers, straw, wood, wood-pulp, paper, cardboard and hardboard.ALSO:Edible carbohydrates such as sugar, flour &c. may be optically brightened with a compound of formula <FORM:0941993/A1-A3/1> where R is an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group containing 1-4 carbon atoms and X is O or NH (see Division C2).
