Abstract
The invention comprises 1,5-diethyl-5-D 1-cyclopentenyl barbituric acid; its alkali metal salts; and its preparation as described by (1) condensing a D 1-cyclopentenyl-ethyl-malonic acid dialkyl ester with N-ethyl urea, or (2) condensing a D 1-cyclopentenyl-ethyl cyanacetic acid alkyl ester with N-ethyl urea and hydrolysing the resulting substituted imino-barbituric acid with dilute acid, or (3) condensing an ester of the above types with dicyanodiamide and treating the condensation product (e.g. a substituted diimino-cyano-barbituric acid) with diethyl sulphate or toluene sulphonic acid ethyl ester to produce the ethyl derivitive and hydrolysing this with dilute acid. The compounds are anaesthetics. It is memtioned that aqueous solutions of the sodium salt may be administered parenterally. Specifications 401,693 and 407,685 are referred to.
