Abstract
941,451. Photographic type-composing. ARTYPE Inc. Feb. 23, 1960 [March 31, 1959], No. 6410/60. Heading B6W. [Also in Division B8] A flexible transparent sheet of cellulose acetate or the like has formed thereon characters of various configurations, indicia marks on each lateral side of the said characters, and an adhesive backing, so that when character bearing portions of the sheet are severed therefrom for adhering one after another to a layout surface to form groups of such characters, the indicia marks, which are spaced relative to the characters according to the form thereof serve to enable suitable and uniform spacings of the characters in the said groups to be obtained. As shown (Fig. 1) a sheet 22 of flexible transparent material has letters or other characters 26, indicia marks 30 and a continuous guide line 28 printed preferably on its underside, and has a coating, also on its underside, of a wax-like pressure sensitive adhesive. To form words or other groups of characters on a layout surface such as 36 (Fig. 3), character bearing portions such as 34 (Fig. 1) are severed from the sheet for example by means of a stylus, are applied to the layout 36 so that the portions of line 28 carried thereby coincide with a blue (photographically non-reproducible) line 32 drawn on the layout surface, and are positioned so that successive marks 30 coincide. Alternatively, the marks 30 may be all overlapped or all separated to attain different spacing effects within the groups. After the characters have been burnished into place, the indicia marks and portions of line 28 are cut away and the layout may then be photographed for making a plate for printing multiple copies or used in displays without reproduction. Other types of marks 30 are described. The marks may, for example, be formed as vertically spaced arrows the tips of which are to be aligned, or one of the two marks for each character may have a small horizontal guide bar or scale portion with part of which the other vertical mark is to be aligned -cf. Fig. 18 (not shown)-or the marks may be formed as slots or perforations in the sheet 22.
