Adhesive characters are mounted in alignment on a support surface by first arranging a plurality of templates 20 in a jig 11 (Fig. 1), each template (Fig. 4, not shown) having a recess shaped to accommodate a character, and the jig holding the templates in alignment, arranging characters in the templates, applying an adhesive carrier strip 30 to the characters and withdrawing them thereby, applying the strip with the characters to the support surface, so that the characters adhere thereto and removing strip 30 from the characters. Each character is die-cut from plastics material and comprises a rear adhesive layer covered by a removable backing sheet (Fig. 5, not shown). A plurality of characters 25 (Fig. 6), are stacked in each template when several " copies " of a sign legend are to be formed, the backing layers being removed immediately prior to application of the characters to the support surface. Carrier strip 30 is transparent or translucent to enable characters to be accurately placed on the support surface. Fig. 7 shows a template comprising a wooden cut-out 41 as in Fig. 4 (not shown) and a further resilient foam rubber or polystyrene marginal portion 42. As shown, jig 11 comprises flanges 15, forming grooves 16 for accommodating templates 20, flanges 15 being cut away at 17 where templates are inserted.
