Abstract

Zirconium and hafnium salts are separated by feeding an aqueous solution of their mixture into an extraction column in which an aqueous continuous phase is passed countercurrent to a disperse organic phase, passing the zirconium containing organic phase to a decantation zone, passing the decanted organic phase to a stripping column in which the zirconium salt is extracted from the organic phase with water, periodically analyzing the interface of the continuous organic and aqueous phases in the extraction column for solids, and on their detection, continuously withdrawn from the decantation zone a stream comprising solids, organic and aqueous phases. The stream withdrawn may be passed into a second decantation zone in which the solids are removed, and the liquid phases returned to the extraction column. The process is preferably performed using an acid aqueous phase and feeding the mixture to the extraction column at a point between the aqueous and organic feed points. The invention is described with reference to a flow sheet (not shown) using zirconyl and hafnyl nitrates, tributyl phosphate diluted with a hydrocarbon as the organic phase and nitric acid using a rotary disc contactor as the extraction column. The purified zirconium salt is stripped from the organic phase with diionized water preferably by countercurrent contact in the stripping column.
