Abstract

A liquid room and air deodorant composition comprises, by weight of the total composition, 0.5 to 6.0% of an ester of the formula CH2 = C(R)-COOR1 wherein R is hydrogen or a methyl group and R1 is an alkyl group containing 8 to 18 carbon atoms, 0.005 to 0.2% of 3,5,5-trimethylhexanal and at least one propellant agent, the composition being maintained under pressure in a container. Esters specified are octyl methacrylate, decyl methacrylate, undecyl methacrylate, lauryl methacrylate, lauryl acrylate, myristyl acrylate, heptadecyl methacrylate, stearyl acrylate and stearyl methacrylate. As propellant agent, any compatible liquefied normally gaseous organic material is generally suitable, e.g. monochlorodifluoromethane, dichloromonofluoromethane, dichloromonofluoroethane, monochlorodifluoroethane, dichlorodifluoromethane, dichlorotetrafluoroethane, trichloromonofluoromethane, difluoromethane, and also ethane, propane, butane, isobutane and pentane; compressed gases such as nitrogen and carbon dioxide may also be used as propellants. Optional ingredients are (a) inert solvents and (b) antibacterial agents, those specified being (a) hydrocarbon oils, e.g. light mineral oil of medium boiling range (also known as mineral spirits) or deodorized kerosene and (b) triethylene glycol, propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, diethylene glycol, di-isobutyl-phenoxy-ethoxy-ethyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, methyl-dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride and di-isobutyl-cresoxy-ethoxy-ethyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride. When a glycol antibacterial agent is used, it is generally mixed with alcohol to provide single phase compositions.
