Abstract
940,979. Jet propulsion nozzles. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Feb. 3, 1960 [Feb. 3, 1959], No. 3697/59. Heading F1J. A jet propulsion nozzle having a variable area outlet has means radially spaced therefrom to define a duct for atmospheric air which is mixed with the exhaust gases and means for controlling the outlet area of the duct in accordance with the outlet area of the nozzle. The propulsion nozzle 16 has its outlet area varied according to different engine operating conditions by an annular assembly of flaps 38 which are actuated by screw jacks 24 through links 36. A cylindrical member 19, mounted on the outlet end of the nozzle 16, supports a series of circumferentially spaced apart flaps 18 which are radially spaced from the flaps 38 to define a duct communicating with the atmosphere and the interior of the member 19. The members 38 are actuated by the spindles 28 of the jacks 34 acting through links 30. The cylinders 26 are moved simultaneously by an annular member 32 supported by a roller bearing 34. The flaps 36, 38 are arranged to move simultaneously so that when the nozzle area formed by flaps 18 is at a minimum then the duct outlet area is at a maximum and vice versa.
