Abstract

940,922. Centrifugal separators. DAVIDSON & CO. Ltd. June 14, 1962 [July 20, 1961], No. 26331/61. Heading B2P. [Also in Division F1] In a rotary fan, particularly an exhauster fan, having an impeller disposed within a fan casing with a suction eye, for the inlet of dustladen air or gas to the fan casing, disposed in axial alignment with the impeller, the suction eye has the form of a duct or tube containing fixed deflector vanes which impart swirl to the incoming dust-laden air or gas and, located adjacent the junction of the tubular suction eye with the fan casing, there is an annular deflector having a section which provides one flange directed into the tubular suction eye and another flange directed radially outwardly into the fan casing, which flanges are spaced from the walls of the fan casing and of the tubular suction eye. In order to reduce abrasion of impeller blades 1 by dust in the air or gas being pumped, the inlet duct 4 has arranged therein a series of fixed vanes 5 which impart swirl to the incoming dust-laden air or gas. This causes a major portion of the dust to be thrown centrifugally on to inner wall surface 10 leaving relatively dust-free air or gas which passes to the impeller 1, the dust subsequently passing through an annular passage 11, formed between a flange 9 of an annular deflector 8 and the surface 10 and being directed by a flange 12 radially outwardly to by-pass the impeller 1 and pass into the fan casing 3 provided with outlet 7. The deflector 8, which may be of a surface-hardened material, is secured to the casing 3 with spacers 14 by bolts 15 screwed into projections 13 extending substantially tangentially, in the direction of rotation, from the flange 12. The deflector 8 may instead be secured to the tubular suction eye 4. The crosssection of the deflector 8 may be substantially arcuate. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) the projections 13 are omitted and the deflector is secured directly to the impeller and rotates therewith.
