Cellular products are obtained by polymerizing acrylic acid amide, alone or together with up to 70% by weight of acrylonitrile, acrylic acid or styrene, in an acid aqueous medium in the presence of a polymerization catalyst either at a pH of 4-7 at 50‹-110 ‹C., or at a pH ranging from that of 0À0005% strength sulphuric acid to that of 60% strength at 20‹-110‹C., removing water and acid from the product, heating the product in powder form to 150‹-190‹C, subjecting to pressure, the upper limit of which is determined by the compressibility of the product substantially without abstracting the liberated heat, and expanding the product at the temperature reached, by releasing the pressure.
