Breaking-down means comprises a pump operable by fluid pressure, e.g., compressed air, and having a low pressure stage and a high pressure stage with interposed valve means, a hydraulic breaking-down head being coupled directly to the high pressure stage. As shown, the breaking-down head 13 is secured to a high pressure stage 11 separated by manually set, slide-valve means 12 from the low pressure stage 10, the pump plungers 42, 28 are connected respectively to pistons 15, 20. The piston 15 is double acting and works in a cylinder 16 connected through a slide valve 17 with the compressed air supply 48. The slide valve stem 26 has a head 58 which is slidable in the hollow piston rod 28 and acts, at the ends of the reciprocations of the piston 15, to compress one or other of springs 57, 60. When the spring compression overcomes a spring pressed detent the slide valve 17 is moved to reverse the air admission and exhaust and the direction of the piston 15. The piston 15 thus reciprocates as long as the air admission valve 49 is open. The plunger rod 63 is attached to the piston rod 28 and works in a cylinder 68 to suck oil, through a non-return valve 60, from a reservoir cylinder 19 and force it past the spring-loaded valve 70 to the slide valve 74 which is adjustable either to admit the oil from the plunger 63, through the port 77, to the near side of the piston 20, whereby oil in the cylinder 24 is compressed to a still higher pressure by the piston 23, to force oil beneath the jack plungers 14; or to join the ports 77, 81 for the return of oil to the reservoir 19 whilst oil from the plunger 63 is forced through the passages 78 to the top of the jack plungers to return them to retracted condition. The jack plungers are protected by caps 84. A piston 18 is freely slidable on the sleeve 43 to follow up variations in the oil content of the cylinder 19.
