In a bucket excavator the angle of tilt of the bucket 10 to a datum level can be adjusted with respect to and maintained with respect to said level during at least the initial vertical swinging of the bucket-carrying arm 9 by a linkage 13, 14, 15 pivotally interconnected at 5 and incorporating a ram 13. The linkage is pivoted at 3 to an extension 11 of the excavator jib 7, at 6 to the arm 9, and at 4 to the bucket 10.
