Abstract

940,589. Preheating furnace charges. WESTFALIA DINNENDAHL GROPPEL A.G. Nov. 21, 1961 [Nov. 25, 1960], No. 41573/61. Heading F4B. In apparatus for preheating granular material and feeding it to a rotary furnace, hot exhaust gases from the furnace pass in counterflow to the granular material, which moves downwardly from step-to-step in a vertical shaft having steps, with horizontal upper surfaces, alternately disposed on opposite sides of the shaft. As shown, the shaft 2 contains a series of steps 3 projecting horizontally from the shaft walls and extending not more than half way across the shaft. Both the shaft and the steps are of refractory brickwork, the steps being supported by brick arches. Granular material from a hopper 7 passes through a feeding and metering device 8 into the head of the shaft 2 and the hot furnace gases pass up the shaft to a cyclone separator 4 which separates entrained dust.
