Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0940533/C2/1> (wherein R represents an acyclic hydrocarbon radical of at most 4 carbon atoms, and wherein either A represents an oxygen atom and n is 2 or 3, or A represents <FORM:0940533/C2/2> and n is 1), and the preparation thereof by reacting an appropriate 5-hydroxyalkylbarbituric acid with phosgene in the presence of a base and reacting the resulting chloroformic ester with excess of ammonia. The products form water-soluble salts with mineral or organic bases (e.g. sodium hydroxide, piperazine or morpholine). Pharmaceutical compositions.-The foregoing compounds have tranquillizing and sedative activity and are also useful for treating spasmodic conditions, for which purposes they are preferably administered orally in the form of tablets.
