Abstract

The present invention relates to new substituted 7 beta -amidino- DELTA <3>- cephem-4-carboxylic acids; salts and esters thereof and salts of such esters; methods of producing these compounds; new intermediates; pharmaceutical compositions therewith; dosage units thereof; and their use in human and veterinary therapy, the compounds having the formula <IMAGE> in which <IMAGE> represents <IMAGE> -A- represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon optionally containing an aryl moiety and optionally being substituted with amino radical; R1 represents hydrogen, or lower alkyl; R2 represents hydrogen, lower alkyl, monoacyl, carbamoyl, guanyl, guanylcarbamoyl; R1 and R2 together with nitrogen represent monocyclic, saturated ring or azido or R1 and R2 together represent <IMAGE> R3 and R4 being hydrogen, lower alkyl, aryl or aryl-lower-alkyl, or R3 and R4 together with nitrogen form monocyclic, saturated ring; p is 1, or when A contains an aryl moiety p is 0 or 1; Ceph. stands for a DELTA <3>-cephem-4- carboxylic acid radical. The present compounds are active against a variety of microorganisms, in particular pathogenic gram positive and gram negative bacteria.
