Abstract

940,530. Vibratory massage apparatus. F. SCHROEDER-STRANZ. Nov. 25, 1959 [Nov. 26, 1958], No. 39960/59. Heading A5R. Therapeutic vibratory apparatus comprises a platform 2 and handle bars 13, 14, 15 vibrated by an unbalanced shaft 3 disposed below the platform, the shaft being of generally uniform cross-section but having a non-uniform distribution of the material from which it is made. The shaft is mounted in bearings in a housing 1 the centre of gravity of which lies in or near a vertical plane through the axis of the shaft. The housing is supported by rubber feet 25 or an elastic suspension (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown) on a base 28. The shaft has boreholes 12 filled with a material of a specific gravity differing from that of the material of the shaft. Alternatively, the shaft may comprise an outer tube with a longitudinal flat (not shown) within which fits a rod also with a longitudinal flat, the unbalance of the shaft being adjusted by rotation of the rod within the tube so that the relative positions of the flats is varied. Locking means is provided to fix the rod and tube in the desired relative positions. The shaft is rotated at 4000-6000 revolutions per minute by a motor which is connected to the shaft by a belt 6 and pulleys 10, 11. The motor may also rotate a blower 26 which directs oxygen, solution or a powder on to the patient being treated and operate a buzzer to treat the patient with sound. The handlebars are adjustable in height. An additionally manually applicable vibrator 23 may be connected to the shaft by a flexible drive 24.
