940,455. Amplitude modulation systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Feb. 19, 1960 [Feb. 26, 1959], No. 5942/60. Heading H4L. In a transistor modulator or demodulator the modulation or modulated carrier is transformer coupled in push-pull between the emitters of a pair of transistors T 1 , T 2 from an input P 1 , P 2 and carrier is applied at P 3 , P 4 effectively between a centre tap of the modulation input to the transistors and a centre tap of a negative feedback winding to the bases of the transistors, coupled with an output winding of the circuit. If w 1 is the mean frequency of the input, and w 3 the carrier frequency, resonant circuits tuned to (w 3 -W 1 ) are also connected, in the output circuits of the transistors. A potentiometer resistance network R 3- R 5 and including a series back biased diode G 1 is connected across the carrier input whose amplitude being greater than the back bias is thereby limited. Additional resonant circuits C6, C7 tuned to a signalling frequency above the voice frequency band may be inserted between opposite halves of the primary of the output transformer TR3 and this signalling frequency extracted and passed to a different output transformer TR4.
