In a dynamo-electric machine, for example an inductor alternator or a synchronous motor the rotor comprises alternate projecting laminµ 2 (Fig. 2) of high purity iron separated by silicon steel spacers 10, the projecting laminµ 2 being magnetically saturated in use at a value of magnetizing field much lower than that at which the other magnetic parts of the machine are saturated. The Specification alleges that since the maximum torque of a machine is dependent on the amplitude of the flux variation (from a maximum when the rotor and stator teeth are aligned to a minimum when they are out of register) the use of high purity iron projections reduces hysteresis losses, thus allowing a greater field excitation to be used and thus increasing the efficiency of the machine. The description explains with reference to a bipolar synchronous motor (Fig. 2, not shown) how to calculate the ratio of the thickness of the projecting laminµ to the thickness of the spacers. A 4-pole alternator (Fig. 3) embodying the principle of the invention has stator windings 14a, 14b, 14c, 14d interconnected to form an impedance bridge with a D.C. source 17 connected across one diagonal and an A.C. output taken across the other. The invention may also be applied to reciprocating machines.
