Abstract

<PICT:0940205/C1/1> In the manufacture of dished glass bodies 8 from sheet glass, the glass sheet is heated in a furnace while supported in a female mould liner 9, inserted into a female mould 11, conforming to the shape of the liner 9 and supporting the liner against deformation under pressure, and pressed into shape by a heated male die 12, the female mould liner 9 being formed with a flange 10 to surround the edges of the glass sheet to prevent substantial temperature differences in the sheet. In the example shown, a heated pressure-plate 14 is used to restrain the glass sheet and prevent wrinkling. In another example, the male die and female liner both conform to the shape of the finished article and in a further example, the male die conforms to the final shape and draws the glass through a ring forming the female liner. Heated gases may be supplied through holes in the male die to facilitate deformation of the glass. Dies and liners are of stainless steel. The glass before shaping may be coated as with ceramic or metallic frits or may be figured.
