Abstract

940,163. Magnetic compositions. AMPEX CORPORATION. May 24, 1961 [June 10, 1960], No. 18705/61. Heading H1H. A method of preparing cobalt free ferrites includes the steps of (a) sintering a mixture of constituent materials, (b) performing a further heat treatment step to increase the oxygen content, (c) magnetically annealing the material by heating to a temperature between 200‹ C. and the Curie temperature, applying a magnetic field and cooling the material in the field. Manganese ferrous and nickel ferrous ferrites with square hysteresis loops may be formed, and the sintering may take place between 1150‹ C. and 1450‹ C. in an inert atmosphere, e.g. N, A, He or CO 2 . The further heat treatment step may take several forms, viz. (a) slow cooling of the material to a temperature 200-500‹ ‹ C. below the sintering temperature (at 200‹ C./ hour) optionally holding this temperature and quenching to room temperature all in the inert atmosphere, (b) quickly quenching to room temperature, reheating to a temperature between 200‹ C. and 500‹ C. below the sintering temperature and requenching all in an inert atmosphere, (c) quenching after sintering in an inert atmosphere, reheating in air to a temperature between 500‹ C. and 900‹ C. for about 15 minutes and cooling. Magnetic cores exhibiting square hysteresis loops may be formed, the magnetic field being applied by a threading wire, a solenoid or a magnet. The inert atmosphere may be N 3 , A, He or CO 2 . Specific ferrites, temperatures and field strengths are mentioned.
