Abstract
Air inhibition of the curing of defined unsaturated polyesters is mitigated by the presence of defined allyl monomers. The unsaturated polyesters are defined as substantially linear polyesters which do not contain acrylyl or methacrylyl groups and which are polycondensation products of one or more glycols with one or more dicarboxylic acids at least one of which is an olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid. The allyl monomers are those whose molecule contains an allyl ether group and either (i) the residue of an a ,b -olefinically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid or (ii) the residue of an a ,b -unsaturated dicarboxylic acid partially esterified with a monohydric alcohol. A conventional comonomer, e.g. styrene, may also be present. Specified allyl compounds are polyhydric alcohols, e.g. pentaerythritol, sorbitol, glycerol or 2,2,6,6-tetrahydroxymethyl cyclohexanol, which have been partially etherified with allyl alcohol and partially esterified with, for example, acrylic, methacrylic or crotonic acid or methyl or ethyl hydrogen maleate. In examples curing is effected with methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and cobalt naphthenate. Attention is directed to the Applicant's prior Specification 928,801 which claims a composition comprising an unsaturated polyester, a vinyl comonomer and not less than 20% based on the weight of polyester of a liquid compound containing at least two allyl ether groups and which may be an ester of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid. According to the Provisional Specification the allyl compound may be any containing an allyl ether group and an a ,b -unsaturated acid residue and the polyester need not be free from acrylic or methacrylic groups.ALSO:Polyhydroxy compounds, partially etherified with allyl alcohol and partially esterified with either an a ,b -olefinically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid or a monohydric alcohol partial ester of an a ,b -olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid are used in unsaturated polyester resin compositions (see Group IV(a)). Polyhydroxy compounds specified are glycerol, pentaerythritol, sorbitol and 2,2,6,6-tetrahydroxymethyl cyclohexanol. Specified acids and partial esters are acrylic, methacrylic and crotonic acids and C1-C4 alkyl hydrogen maleate ester of sorbitol tetra-allyl ether and diallyl ether of pentaerythritol esterified with one mole each of acrylic and methacrylicacids. In examples preparative details are given for (1) the dicrotonate ester of pentaerythritol diallyl ether and (2) the mixed maleate ester of sorbitol tetra-allyl ether and ethyl alcohol.
