Abstract
The invention comprises 16a ,17a -epoxy-1,4-pregnadiene-11a -ol-3,20-dione, 16a ,17a -epoxy-1,4-pregnadiene-11a ,21-diol-3,20-dione and the 21-acetate thereof, and a process for introducing a D 1 unsaturation into a steroid of the pregnane series, which comprises subjecting a D 4-pregnene to the fermentative action of the microorganism, Bacterium mycoides and/or Bacterium havaniensis to form the corresponding D 1,4-pregnadiene. Suitable starting steroids are of the formula: <FORM:0939820/IV(a)/1> wherein X is hydrogen or halogen, Y is methylene, hydroxymethylene or carbonyl, Z is methylene, hydroxymethylene or loweralkoxymethylene, R1 is hydrogen or hydroxyl and R is hydrogen or lower alkanoyl or R1 and Z together form a 16a ,17a -epoxy group. Anti-flammatory compositions containing the above compounds are administered in tablets, powders and pills, or parenterally in solution or suspension.
