Abstract

939,703. Boring earth &c. GEORGE WIMPEY & CO. Ltd. June 28, 1962 [April 14, 1961], No. 13550/61. Class 85. Earth sampling apparatus comprises an auger 27, a sampling tube 50, and means 22 for reciprocating the tube within the auger. The auger with its lower end closed by a plug is rotated into the ground, the plug is withdrawn from the auger, the tube is lowered into the auger until its cutting edge 14 is adjacent the lower end of the auger, the tube is reciprocated until its effective length extends beyond the auger to enclose a sample, and the tube and sample are raised to the surface. The lowermost part 10 of tube is removed with part of the sample for testing and the wall parts 23 . . . 26 of the tube parts 11, 12 are removed so that their contents may be examined. The above operation is repeated without use of a plug until the required depth is reached. After initial drilling the sample tube shown in Fig. 6 may be locked to and rotated with the auger prior to extension below the auger, a ball valve 39 ensuring that the tube may be filled and that soil is retained during withdrawal. The tube may be of unplasticized polyvinyl chloride.
