Abstract

939,672. Electrolytic cleaning and coating of metal objects. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY, EURATOM. Jan. 15, 1962 [Jan. 14, 1961], No. 1466/62. Class 41. Apparatus for use in electrolytically cleaning and coating a cylindrical metal object 7, such as a uranium fuel element for use in nuclear reactors, comprises a drum-like electrode formed by two perforated semi-cylindrical parts 3 and 4 and at least two circular polyethylene covered metal hoops 6, 6<SP>1</SP> which support the cylindrical object 7 in a tank 8. The electrode and hoops are fixedly mounted on an axle 1 and can be oscillated by a motor-driven crank mechanism 9. The hoops lie in convergent planes to ensure that the oscillation continuously changes the points of support of the object and also the portion of the object's surface which faces the electrode. Movement of the object axially of the hoops is prevented by polyethylene guides 10, 10<SP>1</SP> and current is supplied to the object by a flexible contact element 12. In use, the object may be electrolytically cleaned while facing the drum part of greater radius and electrolytically coated while facing the drum part of smaller radius, the drum being connected first as cathode and then as anode. The half of the drum electrode intended for cleaning is formed of nickel or stainless steel and the half intended for electrolytic depositing is of the metal it is desired to deposit or in the case of chromium plating may be of an inert metal such as lead.
