A vehicle carries a container 27 mounted on a sub-frame 15 so that it may be raised by spring pressure to a carrying position and lowered by fluid pressure to a weighing position, load cells or strain gauges 30 supporting the container unassisted in the weighing position. Means are provided for locating and positioning the subframe on the vehicle for imparting tractive and braking forces to the sub-frame. The sub-frame seats on jacks 8 and springs 11 therein, Fig. 3, hold it and the container in the carrying position. To weigh the container a valve 23 in a hydraulic circuit, Fig. 6, is turned to the position shown in full lines and oil from a pump 24 then enters a port in the cylinder 9 of each jack and forces down the pistons 10 against the force of the springs 11 so that the sub-frame seats on the load cells, the weight being shown on an indicator 31. When the sub-frame 15 is raised to the travelling position, conical holes 20 therein, Fig. 4, engage conical heads 17a on bolts 17 which are adjustable in a channel 16 secured to the chassis. Alternatively, extensions from the pistons 10 may have conical ends. The load cells or strain gauges may be incorporated in the hydraulic jacks which, when raised, bring them into contact with the container or subframe. A micro-switch may be operated by the hydraulic jacks to prevent the excitation of a driving motor, or interrupt the circuit of a petrol engine and prevent transport of the vehicle as soon as the weighing begins.
