Abstract
The invention comprises diazapolymethine dyes of formula <FORM:0939517/IV(a)/1> wherein A and Z are divalent radicals which complete a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring system to which a further ring may be anellated, R1 is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl radical with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a cyclohexyl, benzyl or phenyl radical, R2 is an alkyl radical with 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a benzyl radical, X is an anion and m and c are 1 or 2. The dyes are prepared by (a) coupling a hydrazone of formula <FORM:0939517/IV(a)/2> wherein Y is a hydrogen atom or an arylsulphonyl radical, or a salt thereof with a heterocyclic cyanomethyl compound of formula <FORM:0939517/IV(a)/3> in the presence of an oxidizing or dehydrogenating agent and optionally alkylating the resultant dye or (b) coupling a diazo compound of an amine of formula <FORM:0939517/IV(a)/4> with a cyanomethyl compound of the formula shown above and optionally alkylating the resultant dye. The dyes may be used to colour natural or regenerated cellulose, leather, synthetic polyamides, polyesters and polyurethanes and particularly polyacrylonitriles in yellow, orange and red shades. In an example 3-methylbenzothiazolone-2-hydrazone in aqueous hydrochloric acid solution is mixed with an aqueous suspension of 2-cyanomethylbenzimidazole, stirred and cooled and aqueous solutions of ferric chloride and sodium acetate are added to precipitate the dye of formula <FORM:0939517/IV(a)/5> which on methylation with dimethyl sulphate and precipitation as the tetrachlorozincate gives a dye of formula <FORM:0939517/IV(a)/6> Further examples are specified.
