[Also in Groups XII and XXVIII] A quenching apparatus for heated articles comprises a quenching bath received in a vessel d and an extraction conduit e forming a closed circuit with the bath, preferably as shown, wherein the articles to be quenched drop into one end e<SP>1</SP>, preferably flared, of the extraction conduit and are conveyed therethrough into a basket f immersed in the bath by circulation of the bath liquid by an auxiliary circuit conduit g through which liquid is abstracted from the bath, e.g. from an overflow sump d<SP>1</SP>, and forced by pump i into the extraction conduit. Initially, such articles as steel parts of clocks and watches may be heated by advancing them through a heating chamber of a furnace a, e.g. on an oscillating feed support plate b towards a discharge shoot c whose end dips into the bath liquid above the end e<SP>1</SP>.
