Abstract
939,430. Electrostatic flocking. L. T. F. BRYAN. April 24, 1962 [Jan. 24, 1961], No. 2814/61. Class 93. An article is coated electrostatically with a fibrous material by fluidizing the particles of fibrous material in a chamber and conveying them while fluidized to a device for electrostatically charging the particles and directing them to the article, the electrostatic forces being such that the deposited particles are attracted to the device so that they are maintained upstanding from the article by the forces of attraction. The device for charging the fibrous particles is preferably a tubular nozzle into which the fluidized flock is conveyed and in which the particles become charged as they pass along the nozzle, which is suitably connected to a suitable source of high-tension current. As shown (Fig. 1), an electrostatic " gun " 10 comprises a nozzle 11 from which the flock is discharged. The flock is delivered to the nozzle by a hose 12 connected to a chamber 13. A source of hightension 14 is connected to the gun by leads 15 in order to charge the flock. Air under pressure is directed downwardly into the chamber 13 through a jet 17 into the mass of flock, thus maintaining a considerable quantity of flock in a fluidized state in the chamber. The air from jet 17 carries the fluidized flock from the chamber along the hose 12. The supply of air to the chamber is controlled by a solenoid actuated switch 18 which is energized by a trigger switch 19 which also connects the high-tension supply 14 to the nozzle. The article to be coated may be provided with an adhesive coating in order to attach the flock thereto. Various modifications are also described.
