Abstract
An abrasive article comprises a body portion cut from a porous non woven non felted abrasive-impregnated web so as to have at least one work contacting surface other than an original surface of the web. The body portion may be composed of interlaced fibres 11 which lie predominantly in parallel planes and the majority of the fibres which are exposed at the work contacting surface 22 are so exposed <PICT:0939361/III/1> <PICT:0939361/III/2> <PICT:0939361/III/3> at their ends 111 as contrasted with their sides. The fibres are bonded together and abrasive grains e.g. flint, are bonded to the fibres at least at the work contacting surface. The work contacting surface extends approximately normal to the parallel planes. The fibres may be composed of a weaker resistant substantially non-swelling material e.g. rayon, silk, wool, hair, nylon, "Orlon" (Registered Trade Mark) i.e. polyacrylonitrile, "Dynel" (Registered Trade Mark) i.e. a copolymer of acrylonitrile and vinyl chloride, and "Dacron" (Registered Trade Mark) i.e. a condensate of dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol, and may have a diameter not exceeding 300 microns. The abrasive grains may be bonded to the fibres and the fibres to one another by the same or by different adhesives which may be water resistant. The body portion may be a strip cut from the web and wound upon itself in convolute form about an axis substantially parallel to the parallel planes, whereby a work contacting surface 32, 33, is provided substantially normal to the parallel planes. The article may be made by a method which includes the step of cutting a shaped article from a porous web of non-woven non-felted abrasivecontaining material so as to provide at least one work contacting surface on the article other than an original surface of the web. The web 10 may be built up by depositing relatively short fibres 11 so that they lie in randomly orientated directions in parallel planes bonding the fibres together by the application of adhesive material 15 e.g. butadiene-acrylonitrile adhesive, by spraying, passing the web through heating zone 17, incorporating abrasive grains by spraying with an abrasive grain-adhesive slurry 18, curing the adhesive by passage through heating zone 171 and rolled at R. The fibres may be bonded together by the use of heat if thermoplastic filaments are used or by immersion in a saturant bath. The abrasive grain may be incorporated by coating the web with adhesive e.g. Eponester adhesive, and then with abrasive grain. The abrasive article may have at least one surface which was an original surface of the web. Specification 571,823 is referred to.
