[Also in Group VIII] A stocking is provided with a longitudinal seam 6 along the sole of the foot and a transverse seam 10 across the heel portion. It is formed by knitting a tubular length of fabric 1 with a bell-like enlarged and reinforced end 4, closing this end by a seam 6, flattening the seamed fabric in the transverse direction adjacent the point 8 and forming a transverse seam 10 across this portion, the parts beyond the seams 6, 10 being automatically cut-off when the seams are formed. The stocking is subsequently shaped on a form board. The seam 6 may be in the form of an arch, Fig. 1, or an asymmetrical curve 16, Fig. 7. In the latter embodiment the heel portion has a reinforcement 18 separate from the toe reinforcement.
