938,968. Cigarette making machines. T. ROWLANDS, and MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. May 4, 1962 [May 5, 1961], No. 16382/61. Class 130. Apparatus for making mouthpiece cigarettes in which components consisting of cigarette lengths C and mouthpiece portions M, to be united together are carried lengthwise on a conveying surface 1, from which they are pushed in a sideways direction, comprises a stop 25 to arrest lengthwise movement of the leading component and suction means 24 to assist urging at least one other component to continue its lengthwise movement while the components are being pushed sideways so that they are abutted endwise. The surface 1 consists of an endless airpervious conveyer which runs over an elongated suction port 6. Cigarette lengths C are fed on to the conveyer 1 and double length mouthpiece portions M are fed between alternate cigarette lengths as described in Specification 876,732. A braking device 9, as described in Specification 917,701, ensures that the mouthpiece portion M abuts the end of the leading cigarette length C. The assemblies of cigarette length, mouthpiece portion, and cigarette length are delivered sideways after the leading cigarette length has abutted against the stop 25 by a reciprocating pusher 16 similar to that described in Specification 917,701. Large suction ports 24 extending nearly across the full width of the surface 1 ensure that the trailing cigarette length C continues to move lengthwise after sideways movement has commenced so as to abut the double mouthpiece portion M.
