Abstract
Quench apparatus for the melt-spinning of synthetic filaments comprises an enclosure having a first chamber (not shown) and a second chamber 14, foraminous means 13 having pores therein interposed between said chambers, the first chamber being pressurised with air at a predetermined value to provide a stream of air under pressure at a value below said predetermined value into the second chamber via the pores in the foraminous means, the second chamber having an opening at its upper end 2 and at its lower end 19, means for supplying air under pressure to the first chamber (not shown) a spinning device 4 adapted to extrude molten filaments into the second chamber through the opening 2, the filaments being passed downwardly through the second chamber and thus through the air stream therein flowing at right angles to the filaments for conditioning the latter, the filaments then being passed through opening 19, perforated means 15 provided with throttling perforations 16 for exhausting air from the second chamber at a controlled uniform rate thereby to condition the filaments uniformly and to prevent erratic filament action, the perforations being arranged at opposite sides of an unperforated vertical central portion of the perforated means, the central portion being in spaced parallel alignment with the vertical axis of the path of the filaments passing through the elongated second chamber 14 and means 6, 7 for taking up the conditioned filaments after they have passed through the second chamber. The perforations 16 are preferably circular, as shown, and at least 5/8 inch diameter, and arranged in longitudinal rows at opposite sides of the unperforated vertical portion, the total perforated area of the perforated means being at least 20% of the total area thereof. As shown, the perforated means may be mounted as a door to one side wall of the second chamber, the door being of smaller length than the side walls 9, 10 of the chambers and only partially covering the open front side of the second chamber. As shown, the perforated means 15 may be opposite the foraminous means 13 and the throttling perforations may be exactly aligned with the foraminous means. The foraminous material may be gauze fabric, felt, or a fine mesh wire screen. A series of such quench chambers may be positioned in extended rows consisting of a series of chambers arranged in side by side relation so that a common side wall is shared by adjacent chambers, and another row of quench chambers may be arranged in back-to-back spaced relation with the other row of chambers, the space between the rows being provided for a common plenum chamber. The apparatus is especially suitable for the processing of heavy denier filament bundles or yarns, especially of total denier at least 700. Erratic filament action is avoided and yarn of greater uniformity is obtained.
