In a method of exhausting to the outside of chimney stacks smoke &c. to prevent it being blown down by the relative wind towards the upper works of ships, trains or stationary installations the smoke &c. is vented to the atmosphere within or in close proximity of vortices created by the action of the relative wind about a member having an aerofoil crosssection and disposed substantially horizontally. The streamlined smoke stack 1, Fig. 3, of a ship comprises horizontal wings 3, 3<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5, of aerofoil cross-section having horizontal ducts 6, 6<SP>1</SP> which lead smoke &c. from an exhaust duct 4 within the stack for exit to atmosphere witthin or in close proximity to marginal vortices created by the wings.
