Abstract
An ion-exchange material comprises a cellulosic sponge having dispersed therein an ion-exchanger which may be an ion-exchange cellulose or an ion-exchange resin. Specified ion-exchange celluloses are cation-exchangers sulphethoxy cellulose, cellulose phosphate, carboxymethyl cellulose, cellulose citrate, cellulose hydrogen phthalate and oxidized cellulose anion-exchangers aminoethyl cellulose, aminopropyl cellulose, diethylaminoethyl cellulose, ecteola cellulose, di-isopropylaminoethyl cellulose and tri-ethylaminoethyl cellulose. Specified ion-exchange resins are cation-exchangers polystyrene sulphonic acid, phenol sulphonic acid/formaldehyde and polymetha-crylic acid anion-exchangers a styrene polymer or amine/aldehyde condensate having amino groups or quaternary ammonium groups as active groups. The ion-exchanger is incorporated into a viscose solution and cellulose regenerated from the mixture in sponge form in the usual manner; flax fibres may be included in the mixture. Specified ion-exchange resins are cation exchangers polystyrene sulphonic acid, phenol sulphonic acid/formaldehyde and polymethacrylic acid anion exchangers a styrene polymer or amine/aldehyde condensate having amino groups or quaternary ammonium groups as active groups. The ion-exchanger is incorporated into a viscose solution and cellulose regenerated from the mixture in sponge form in the usual manner, flax fibres may be included in the mixture.
