Abstract
Ion-exchange resin compositions suitable for de-ionizing water in mixed-bed de-ionisers comprise a mixture of (1) a basic ion-exchange resin with quaternary ammonium reactive groups, (2) a strongly acidic ion-exchange resin with for example sulphonic acid active groups, and a minor proportion by weight based upon the above two resins of a resin (3) comprising a basic ion-exchange resin in which the reactive groups consist initially of quaternary ammonium and tert. amine groups, or a weakly basic ion-exchange resin, or a weakly acidic ion-exchange resin. The weakly basic and acidic ion-exchange resins have secondary or t-amine groups, such as would result from the chloromethylation and subsequent amination of a polystyrene resin and carboxylic acid or phenolic hydroxyl groups respectively. The basic resin (1) and the acidic resin (2) are preferably in a ratio of from 1 1/2 to 2:1 and the third resin is preferably present in from 2 1/2 to 25% by weight.ALSO:A mixed-bed ion-exchange resin de-ioniser for water comprises a mixture of (1) a basic ion-exchange resin with quaternary ammonium reactive groups, (2) a strongly acidic ion-exchange resin with, for example sulphonic acid active groups, and a minor proportion by weight, based on the above two resins, of a resin (3) comprising a basic ion-exchange resin in which the reactive groups consist initially of quaternary ammonium and tert-amine groups, or a weakly basic ion-exchange resin, or a weakly acidic ion-exchange resin. The weakly basic and acidic ion-exchange resins have sec or tert amine groups, such as would result from the chloromethylation and subsequent amination of a polystyrene resin, and carboxylic or phenolic hydroxyl groups respectively. The basic resin (1) and the acidic resin (2) are preferably in a ratio of from 1 1/2 to 2 : 1, and the third resin is present in from 2 1/2 to 25% by weight. The feed water is passed through a bed of the mixture, and may be regenerated and remixed in situ.
