Anionic exchange resins are produced by chloroalkylating a cross-linked copolymer of monovinyl aromatic compounds and polyvinyl compounds with a monochlorodialkyl ether using ferric chloride or sulphuric acid monohydrate as catalyst at 55-70‹ C. and then aminating the copolymer in known manner. The copolymer may be derived from styrene and 0À05-20 mol. per cent of divinyl benzene and may be chloroalkylated with monochlorodimethylether using 0À01-1À2 parts catalyst/ part copolymer to obtain a product which contains up to 2 chloroalkyl groups/benzene nucleus and which is also further cross-linked by methylene bridges between the benzene nuclei. The amination may be carried out using di- or tri-methylamine, ethylene diamine, propylene diamine, dimethyl ethanolamine or dipropylene triamine.
