Abstract
A silicone rubber-forming composition comprises (A) a linear, essentially diorganosiloxane polymer of the formula <FORM:0938701/IV(a)/1> wherein each R is a monovalent hydrocarbon (saturated or unsaturated), halohydrocarbon or cyanoalkyl radical and n has an average value of 1,99 to 2,01, (B) a reinforcing inorganic filler having a maximum average particle size of 1 micron and a minimum surface area of 100 square metres per gram, and (C) an epoxide compound in a proportion of 0,05 to 10% by weight of polymer (A). Fillers (B) specified are silicas (fume, aerogel, xerogel and naturally occurring), oxides of Al, Ti and Fe and C blacks. Compounds (C) disclosed are low molecular weight hydroxyl-containing epoxide resins or epoxide varnish raw materials; reaction products of a polyhydric phenol and a polyfunctional epichlorohydrin or polyepoxide; ethers containing epoxide groups; and organosilicon compounds containing epoxide groups, as disclosed in Specification 834,326. To secure the desired cure, a vulcanizing agent may be added, such as an organic peroxide or a metal carboxylate together with an ortho- or polysilicate or an alkylhydrogensiloxane, as disclosed in Specification 841,825. Conventional additives may also be added. In a typical example (1) a mixture of a hydroxy-terminated methylphenyl-, dimethyl-, vinylmethyl-siloxane copolymer, fume silica, wet process silica, the reaction product of allyglycidyl ether with bisphenol-A, and dichlorobenzoyl peroxide, was prepared by milling and stored; after 4 weeks the mixture was readily milled and could be sheeted, extruded etc.; a sheet of the mixture was vulcanized at 155 DEG C. for mins. to yield an elastomer. Uses: As gasketing, tubing, sealing, extrusions, mouldings, prosthetic devices, sheeting and insulation.
