Abstract

938,223. Abrasive devices. REXALL DRUG & CHEMICAL CO. (Rexall Drug Co.). Oct. 30, 1959, No. 36871/59. Class 60. An abrasive device comprises a shirred abrasive strip material mounted upon a support or backing, said shirred abrasive strip material being adhesively secured to the backing along alternate fold lines of the shirred strip material with the individual shirrs thereof at least partially overlapping one another in the direction of movement of the device during use and forming a plurality of separate abrading elements constituting the working face of the abrasive device. An endless abrasive belt, Figs. 1 and 3, comprises a flexible fabric backing member 15 to which is secured by a layer of adhesive 16 a shirred abrasive sheet material 17, e.g. a fibrous abrasive-containing sheet material as in Specification 557,038. The adhesive may be permanently flexible rubber-base adhesive. The backing has a diagonal splice and the shirred material a transverse splice. In a modification, Fig. 5, the shirred material has slits 23, 24 lengthwise of the belt; the slits 23 are staggered laterally with respect to slits 24, and there are unslit regions 25. In a further modification, the shirred material consists of a layer of melted steel wool fibres preferably impregnated with rubber latex. The layer may be impregnated with thermosetting or thermoplastic adhesives, synthetic rubber latices or elastomers such as polychloroprene or silicone latices, glue, casein, hard soap and waxes or the like. In a further modification, Fig. 11, the backing is reinforced by lengthwise filaments or strands 35, 36 of high tensile strength material eg. nylon or glass fibre cording. An abrasive disc, Fig. 7, comprises an abrasive annulus 28 secured by adhesive 29 to a flexible backing 27 of vulcanized fibre, spring steel or one or more plies of rubber-impregnated sisal fibre or other fabric or material, singly or in combination. The abrasive annulus may consist of narrow strips of shirred abrasive-included fibrous sheet material mounted on the backing in concentric array or a single strip of material may be spirally arranged. An abrasive wheel or drum, Fig. 9, comprises shirred abrasive-included fibrous sheet material 33 secured by adhesive 34 to a hub 32 which may have a covering of foam or sponge rubber or other resilient material.
