Abstract

The invention comprises metalliferous azo dyestuffs of the general formula <FORM:0938152/IV(a)/1> in which X represents an alkyl group containing at most 9 carbon atoms or a phenyl, phenylalkyl or cyclohexyl group or a chlorine atom, Y represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing at most 6 carbon atoms, Z represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and Me represents an atom of copper or nickel and a process for the preparation thereof wherein an azo dyestuff of the general formula <FORM:0938152/IV(a)/2> wherein X, Y and Z have the meanings given above and A represents a hydroxyl or methoxy group is treated with an agent yielding copper or nickel. The metal free dyes are prepared by conventional procedures and metallized before or after purification, e.g. in the coupling mixture. Examples are furnished. The dyes are used to dye anodized aluminium (see Group XXXVI).
