Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0938042/IV(a)/1> wherein both R1 and R2 may represent hydrogen atoms or one of R1 and R2 may represent a chlorine or bromine atom and the other a hydrogen atom and their acid addition salts and the preparation thereof by reacting an appropriate di-(4-amino phenoxy)pentane with cyanamide or a functional derivative thereof. 4 - Acetamido - 2-chlorophenol condensed with 1,5-dibromo pentane gave 1,5-di-(4-acetamido-2-chlorophenoxy) pentane and an hydrolysis with acid, 1,5-di-(4-amino-2-chlorophenoxy) pentane dihydrochloride. Similarly were prepared 1,5-di-(4-acetamido-2-bromophenoxy)-, -(4-acetamido-3-chlorophenoxy)-, -(4-amino-2-bromophenoxy)-, and -(4-amino-3-chlorophenoxy)-pentane and their dihydrochlorides.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions, having anti-bacterial properties, comprise a phenoxy-alkane (or an acid addition salt thereof) of the general formula <FORM:0938042/VI/1> wherein R1 and R2 are both hydrogen or one of R1 and R2 is chlorine or bromine and the other is hydrogen, and a suitable carrier. Examples are given of throat lozenges containing 1,5-di-(4-guanidino-phenoxy) pentane dihydrochloride and a lignocaine base and of an injection solution containing the above active ingredient with 2,4 - diamino - 5 - (3,4 - dimethoxybenzyl) - pyrimidine and sulphadiazine. Compositions may also take the form of tablets, cachets, capsules, ampoules, suppositories, granules, powders, solutions, suspensions or ointments.
