[Also in Group XXXVIII] In a recording and indicating apparatus data is recorded and displayed upon one or more of several parallel tapes. A printing device is selectively movable across tapes for printing thereon. A tape is stepped on each time a character is printed on it, and is also stepped on by pulses not associated with the printing, whereby the recorded data may be aligned with an indicator. In a first embodiment six tapes are provided. The tapes are fed by individual driving rollers 5 selectively clutched to a single driving shaft. A carriage 3 carrying a printing head 2 and ink-ribbon 7 is mounted for transverse movement on rails 4 for association with a selected tape by the operation of push-buttons. The head 2 may carry separate devices for printing plain language characters and numerals, and also for recording in a manner suitable for machine reading, e.g. photo-electrically. The numerals may indicate batch numbers, for example, and a line 9 may be formed such that its length represents the number of articles in an order. Pulses cause the end of this line to be placed adjacent the end of a mask 8, and as the several articles of the order are assembled further pulses cause the tape to advance and the line to be obscured. Thus the length of the line not obscured represents the amount of the order unfulfilled. In a modification, Fig. 3, two tapes are superimposed, the upper tape 16, which has an associated carbon tape 17, being passed over a separating block 14 below which is fed the tape 15 on which recording is effected by a head 12. Printed characters appear on tape 15. Head 13 prints a code in dots on tape 16, no such printing appearing on tape 15.
