In a stabilizing apparatus for a ship incorporating a non-rotary shaft 1 engaged at one end with a support (socket 2 with pins 2A engaging fixed bearings 3), a fin 4 rotatable about the shaft 1, and a rotary vane drive motor having an outer casing 7 coupled to the fin, an inner casing 11 coupled to the shaft, the outer casing 7 is coupled to the fin by a resilient coupling (constituted by pins 10 and resilient bushes 9) which constrains the fin to rotate with the casing but otherwise permits relative movement between the fin and the casing, and the inner casing 11 is spaced from the shaft 1 over all or the greater part of its length (being in contact with the shaft only at the point 12 close to where the shaft is held in the socket).
