Abstract

937,283. Electric control. ROBERT BOSCH G.m.b.H. Jan. 19, 1960 [Jan. 27, 1959], No. 1835/60. Class 40 (1). [Also in Groups XXVII and XL (c)] In a regulating system for an internalcombustion engine the fuel injection valve and the ignition timing are controlled by common electronic means responsive to both engine speed and throttle setting. Ignition control.-Unidirectional pulses derived from the alternating output from a winding 64 of an engine-driven generator change-over a monostable transistor multivibrator circuit 40, 50 in which 50 normally conducts, to cause a third transistor 30 to interrupt the circuit of the usual ignition coil. To ensure that the coil shall be fully energized at high speeds, the rectified output of a second winding 71 on the generator is applied to the monostable circuit to accelerate its return to the stable state to an extent depending on engine speed. Automatic spark advance is given by a resistor capacitor circuit 63, 62 which, acting in conjunction with resistor 64, has a delaying effect on the control impulse which is less as the speed (and hence the frequency of the generating current) rises. A mechanical connection to the throttle pedal adjusts the value of resistor 63 in a direction to reduce the amount of advance as the throttle is opened. Fuel injection control.-A cam 111 rotating with the engine cam shaft operates its contacts four times per revolution to trip a transistor monostable multivibrator 120, 130 in which 120 is normally blocked. 130 is then blocked and a third transistor 110 associated with it becomes conducting to energize a solenoid 101 and open the fuel valve. The time of return of the multivibrator and consequently the time of opening of the valve is reduced in accordance with speed by means of a voltage derived from a third winding on the generator a portion of which voltage is selected by a potential divider controlled by the throttle pedal. The arrangement is such that an increase of speed tends to reduce the period for which the fuel valve is opened, this effect becoming less as the throttle is opened.
