937,245. Variable focal-length objectives. M. C. SCHNEIDER. Nov. 11, 1960 [Dec. 12, 1959], No. 38843/60. Class 97 (1). In an objective and mount, two or more optical components can be moved along the optical axis at different speeds in order to vary the focal length by means of a rotatable disc which is provided with cam faces and is parallel to the optic axis of the objective. As shown (Figs. 3 and 4), lens systems 11a, 15a slidable in a tube 1a by means of members 11, 15 are adjusted on rotation of a knob 3 by means of a cam disc 6a secured to the knob 3 and having two cam slots 9, 13 respectively engaged by pins 10, 14 on the members 11, 15. The pins 10, 14 also slide in longitudinal slots 12, 16 in the tube 1a. The knob 3 is provided with a spring detent 18 which is alternately engageable in two grooves 17, 19, the groove 19 being provided with a number of holes 20 for releasably holding the knob 3 at various preset focal length settings. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 1), in which the disc 6 is eccentrically pivoted at 5 with respect to the knob 3, the disc is coupled to the knob by means of a pin and slot connections 7, 8. The knob 3 may alternatively be connected to the disc by gear means.
