Abstract
Metallic salts of metallo carboxylic acids are prepared by reacting a metal with a metallic salt of a carboxylic acid, both reactants having a particle size less than 100 microns. It is preferred to use as reactants alkali and alkaline earth metals and alkali and alkaline earth metal salts of carboxylic acids having at least one hydrogen atom at the alpha, beta or gamma position. The reaction is preferably carried out while mixing and grinding the reactants, in, say, a ball mill, an inert atmosphere (argon, nitrogen, krypton) or under an inert liquid blanket, e.g. a high boiling hydrocarbon oil. Temperatures of from about 70 DEG C. up to the decomposition temperature of the product can be employed. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a catalyst: catalysts specified include alkali and alkaline earth metal hydrides and amides, and metal salts of organic amides having distillation temperatures below 56 DEG C. such as diethyl sodium amide and dimethyl lithium amide.
