Abstract
Alkali metal borohydrides are produced by reacting at least one boron-containing reagent at elevated temperature under anhydrous conditions with one or more finely divided alkali metal hydrides dispersed in an inert liquid in which the borohydride produced is insoluble. The boron-containing reagents are boron trifluoride or trichloride, organic addition products of boron halides, methyl or ethyl borates, boric oxide, or sodium borofluoride. Alkali metal hydrides are hydrides of sodium, lithium, or potassium hydrides, or mixtures e.g. sodium and potasium hydrides. The hydride is dispersed by violent agitation in a high boiling liquid, e.g. mineral oil at 250-350 DEG C. and the dry boron reagent is added with continued agitation. The precipitate is filtered off and washed with petroleum ether, and the borohydride is extracted by liquid ammonia at -33 DEG C. and recovered by evaporating the ammonia. The reaction may be effected in an autoclave under superatmospheric pressure, e.g. 100-150 psig, and stearic acid may be added as catalyst.
