Abstract
A novel compound of formula Na3AlH6 or 3NaH AlH3 is prepared by reacting sodium and aluminium in atomic ratio of from 2:1 to 3.5.1 or sodium hydride and aluminium in a molar ratio of from 2:1 to 3.5.1 with hydrogen under pressure at from between 135 DEG and 320 DEG C. The synthesis is catalysed by addition of compounds with a slightly acidic hydrogen atom such as di- and tri-phenylmethane, toluene, isopropyl-benzene, cymene, anthracene and fluorene. The solvent may be a liquid hydro-carbon with critical temperature above 250 DEG C. The temperature may be up to 320 DEG C. and the hydrogen pressure may be 150 atm. Sodium aluminium tetrahydride, hexahydrocryolite (Na3AlH6) or triethylaluminium may be present. The aluminium powder may be pretreated by milling with molten sodium.
