Abstract

936,984. Cleaning apparatus. ELECTROCHEMICAL ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Feb. 6, 1962 [Feb. 6, 1961], No. 4432/61. Class 82. - In a drum-type apparatus for pickling, cleaning, phosphating and dip coating, pockets are formed on the drum periphery by a series of rollers or other elements rotatable about axes parallel to the drum axis and spaced around the drum inwardly of the periphery, and a discharge member such as a rod which extends parallel to the drum axis at the periphery and is adjacent the trailing edge of each pocket is positioned to engage a component in a pocket when said pocket has passed to the highest point of a curved surface associated with the drum so as to encompass part of the lower periphery of the drum, said component then rolling outwards and being discharged. As shown in Fig. 3, the drum is formed of two end plates 7 and two intermediate plates 9 mounted on a hub 8 with ten discharge rods 10 spaced equiangularly around the periphery and secured to the end plates. At each of these ten positions radially inwardly of the rods is mounted a spindle 15 carrying rotatable rollers 16, two rollers being located between each of the plates and spacers 17 maintaining the spacing between the rollers. Rods 18 carrying hollow sleeves 19 are mounted intermediate these ten positions and radially inwardly of the rollers 16. The outer edge 20 of the intermediate plates 9 is scalloped so that the periphery of each roller 16 projects beyond the edge. A drum is mounted in each of a series of pickling or washing tanks 1, 2, 3 (Fig. 1) and a curved plate 21 extends the length of the tanks and conforms to the shape of the immersed outer surface of the drums. Cylindrical components are fed into the drum 4 and on rotation of the drum the components are passed through the liquid and discharged into the next drum 5 and then into drum 6. Alternatively non-cylindrical components are packed in perforated cylindrical containers which are then fed to the drum apparatus.
